Face Value

Robert Hensley

"Put some lipstick on, Perfume your neck and slip your high heels on" - Manicure, Lady Gaga

It's coming at you January 12th at 6pm to be exact. Oh, you wanna know what's coming at you don't you? Of course you do!

Emmy Nominated MUA Robert Hensley is launching his YouTube and Podcast show Face Value. "Yes" I'm gonna give you a quick overview of what FV is right here, right now. The show contains candid conversations about our perceptions of beauty.

Robert's first guest is the amazing and talented Valarie Pettiford probably best know for her role "Big Dee Dee" Thorne on Half & Half. I've seen the premiere episode and it is something you don't want to miss! It's insightful not to mention fun!

So I'm going to hand this over to Robert and let him tell you more about it via this video teaser...

Want to know more? Robert gave yours truly five juicy reason you need Face Value in your life:

1) These are truly candid conversations; there was no script, just real talk, recorded live!

2) This is a diverse roster of guests with a range of experiences across the entertainment industry; actors, content creators, and artists expressing a variety of perspectives on beauty.

3) Each episode is easily digestible at 30-40 minutes in length. The video content will be available on YouTube, and the audio from each episode will be available on Apple Podcasts and all major podcast platforms.

4) Pandemic production of the series is a nationwide, remote effort; Robert recorded the interviews in Burbank, CA, while other aspects of the show were being handled in Missouri and Vermont.

5) There is a personal connection with each guest: as well as having done their makeup, Robert also directed Valarie and Denise is the short film "Birth Mother;" Cici was the makeup artist on the first film Robert ever wrote/produced; Christopher has starred in two projects on which Robert was a key artist - the LA revival of "Women Behind Bars" and the digital series "Whata Lark;" and Robert earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for his work on Kit's "Eastsiders" series and was key makeup on his latest series, the forthcoming "Unconventional," on which Briana is one of the costars!

Getting To Know: Shannon Hemmings

Shannon Hemmings
In case you missed episode one, when yours truly chatted Actor Jeremiah Hahn up from filmmaker Robert Hensley's current project Family Affair, well we are now on to episode two.

"Yes" another cast member from the film was also in attendance at the grand opening of Silverback Coffee of Rwanda in Echo Park, CA.

Her name is Shannon Hemmings she portrays Charlie, she has a tale to tell...

MS: So spill who do you play in Family Affair?

SH: Well, I play Charlie. I can't say too much about my character. She's there, she's a happy face, a caring character. Let's just say she was really fun to play.

MS: Nice. How do you know Robert?

SH: I moved to Los Angeles only six months ago...

Shannon
On The Set Of "Nashville"
MS: Where are you from originally?

SH: Atlanta, GA. About two weeks in I was submitting myself for things. I didn't expect anything because they say when you come out here it's hard, it's competitive. So I saw this character and I loved her and I thought "why not" I might as well audition. I was submitted and I was taped, I got the job. I got a little E-Mail, I was like "No Way!" I already booked my first job in LA!

MS: Awesome!

SH: When I went to the table read and got to know who these people were for the first time, it was like "This is really cool." I felt so welcomed in, so excited! It really is who you know and the connections you make, it's a really beautiful thing.

MS: Congratulations! Sometimes it takes forever.

SH: Yeah, thanks! I came here so grounded thinking it would take a whole year to build up my resume, get a manager, what's happened now is mind blowing!

MS: Fantastic! There are so many pitfalls and it's easy to get discouraged.

SH: There were those times where I wondered if it was time to go back home. I wasn't sure if I could do this (laughs) There were time when I felt really alone, it's hard to find community in a brand new place. I'm glad I've stayed strong because everything is really coming together now.

MS: Nice to meet you.

SH: You too! Are you on Instagram?

MS: Yes.

SH: Let's follow each other.

Getting To Know: Jeremiah Hahn

Jeremiah Hahn
A little while back, in the day, I went to the Grand Opening of Silverback Coffee of Rwanda in Echo Park, CA.

Some of the actors from filmmaker Robert Hensley's upcoming project Family Affair were there. One of them happened to be Jeremiah Hahn who portrays Martin in it.

Thus I took out my smart phone hit the voice recorder app and chatted Jeremiah up about the movie, here is what transpired...

MS: I don't know whole lot about Family Affair, give me some 411.

JH: Well, Robert and I have been trying to work together over the years and this project really came together well. I love the character he cast me for, the therapist, he's a window into one of the lead characters. It was a lot of fun to be able to find some truth to that human being and help move the story forward by providing that window. Working with Robert is so much fun!

MS: That's always fun for an actor, I've been there, done that (laughs)

JH: Yeah, Robert isn't like you can only do your part a certain way he allows for an actor's creativity.

Jeremiah Hahn
Crypt TV
MS: I hear you are also on Crypt TV, which, being a horror fan, I'm surprised I didn't hear about until now.

JH: Crypt TV has such a great pedigree, and they're so experimental with the different things they do. It's giving a lot of young voices a platform.

MS: I like that the Entertainment Industry has become more expansive.

JH: There are like 530 scripted series in production.

MS: Wow! I wasn't aware there were that many.

JH: You couldn't get through all of them in a year. (laughs) It's great there are so many options for everyone.

MS: How do you choose what you watch?

JH: If three people recommend it, then I watch it (laughs)

MS: Congratulations, on everything!

JH: Thanks!

"Homewrecker"

Filmmaker and horror fan Robert Hensley has made a delectable short film in the genre with the title Homewrecker - let me give my opinion on it before Robert explains it all to you.

I really love that he has gotten to the root of horror films from my youth, yeah they weren't all slasher films and bloodbaths, stuff like that. They had character, and played upon our inner anxiety and fears.

Robert's short which won the Direct Monthly Online Film Festival is well deserved. It does  a quite modern take on an old tale La Llorona and it works like a charm. I have actually watched it a few times, it's that good. I felt the best way to convey the cool factor of it to all of you minions was this statement from the man behind it all Robert Hensley!!!

"When did horror films become a vehicle for grotesque gore and franchisable maniacs with the weakest of plots barely gluing it all together? Thankfully, filmmakers such as James Wan are producing films which throw back to a more story and character-rich horror genre. This, too, is where I found the inspiration for HOMEWRECKER.

Rona
A huge fan of Hitchcock and Carpenter, I set out to create a short horror film which built up a sense of anticipation. The audience knows something is going on, something is coming, and it all leads up to that reveal. Blood and guts were incidental to the story as a whole.

I was inspired by the traditional fable of “La Llorona,” also known as the Wailing Woman or Woman in White. There are several variations of the tale, all featuring a beautiful woman who married for money, and kills herself in despair when her husband leaves her for another woman. In one version, she kills her children in a rage and then takes her own life when she realizes what she’s done. In all the various tellings, she comes back and walks the riverside where she drowned and wails for the loss of her children or her marriage. Whoever hears her scream is cursed to die.

For HOMEWRECKER, I focused on a failing marriage and a philandering husband. This was the catalyst for Rona to take her own life and her transformation into a vengeful spirit. While “La Llorona” is always connected to water: a stream, a river, or a lake, I chose to consider more domestic uses for water such as bathing, showering, and laundry.

C&C (Chests & Crack)
The first horror film I actually had permission to watch was “My Bloody Valentine,” which has an infamous laundromat scene. Being a child of the eighties, the horror films I grew up with were R-rated, T&A, boy’s club franchises. I also wanted to pay tribute to these movies in some way. Getting permission to film a scene in a laundromat was a start!

Nudity was another. However, I made the decision to keep my female talent clothed, and undress the men, turning T&A into C&C (chests and crack). I cast actors who were not afraid to disrobe and appear nude on camera for a vigorous sex scene, which builds along with the drama happening with Rona at home.

Finally, the colors, saturation, and tones in the finished film find comparisons to the horror films of the 70’s and 80’s. Jason Lange, our cinematographer, who lit and shot HOMEWRECKER by himself, created a beautiful visual tribute to the films which inspired me."
