Road To The Runway

Transgender Fashion Models Navigate Their Individual Paths to Stardom on Here-TV’s Road to the Runway

Here-TV’s new docuseries Road to the Runway examines the roles that gender, race, socio-economic status, and familial approval play in the lives of young, beautiful women charting their course toward fashion’s latest frontier:  the transgender supermodel.  The series profiles the twenty hopefuls competing in this year’s annual Slay Model search.  Cameras follow the women to their hometowns to uncover their roots: the environments they were reared in and the circumstances that helped shape them into the beautiful, statuesque, fashionable young women they are today.  Executive produced by GLAAD-award winner, Cecilio Asuncion and Phil Anthony, RD Alba and produced by Emmy-award winner David Millbern, Paul Colichman, Stephen P. Jarchow and John Mongiardo, Road to the Runway is an important reminder that these Trans models are more than mannequins: they are daughters, friends, and partners in love, with stories that deserve to be heard.

Among the cities visited in Road to the Runway are Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Florida.  In Azle, TX, viewers meet Mylla James who comes from a highly conservative family, yet they support their daughter, joining her at photo shoots and even traveling with her to model opportunities in Los Angeles.  “Most home towns we visit on Road to the Runway are not in areas people would consider progressive,” Slay Model founder Cecilio Asuncion reflects. “It’s interesting that in many of the cases, we often find with parents that when it comes to loving their daughters, politics takes a back seat.”

It was evident culturally, as well.  Ayden Yee is a 15-year-old track star who ranks second in her state of Wisconsin.   She is of Chinese descent, a culture where sons are traditionally deemed as more valuable.  Cameras show the Yee family embracing Ayden for who she is; something Asuncion, an Asian American, found especially moving.  “It is powerful to witness models who enjoy the support of their families back home.  They present as confident and secure.  They’re armed with the knowledge that no matter what happens in the model search, they will be ok because they are loved.”

Sadly, not all of the women are so lucky.  “The reality is a majority of our models have struggled their whole lives with living as their authentic true selves,” Asuncion continues.  “They live in a world where simply walking out of the house takes incredible courage.”

Still, their anguish could prove an advantage in the harrowing world of fashion.  “Courage builds resiliency and that kind of tenacity is key to surviving the inevitable pitfalls on the Road to the Runway,” Asuncion contends. “The model life is not an easy one.  It is filled with unforgiving scrutinization and unavoidable rejection.  It’s not for the faint of heart.”

He makes it clear to the hopefuls in Road to the Runway that his agency, Slay Model Management, is not selling Transness.   “It is a fashion model agency and we are selling a young woman’s capability to represent a brand or a designer.”

It takes more than beauty to be a bookable model. It takes determination, grit, and a visceral understanding that the woman is a model first, and Trans second.  “As is often the case in model competitions, the real challenge is an internal one,” Asuncion says. “It used to be that women reshaped themselves to fit the industry standard; striving to match the idealized version of a Barbie doll. Today’s fashion industry wants to see the real, unfiltered woman beneath the lashes and lipstick.”

What Trans models have in their favor today – unlike any other time in history – is that clients are looking for diversity and representation.   Slay Model Management models have appeared in campaigns for M·A·C Cosmetics, Hyundai, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue Germany, Macy’s, Biore’, Eva Mendes for NY and Co., and Savage X Fenty.  They have appeared on TV in POSE, Law and Order: SVU, Project Runway, and Netflix’s Next in Fashion.  The agency’s first-signed and most recognized supermodel, Arisce Wanzer, who appears in Road to the Runway, has been featured on TV shows like MTV’s Ex on the Beach, and in campaigns for Marco Marco, Opening Ceremony, Truvada, AT&T, Lululemon and Lucky Jeans.

The urge for diversity even accounts for why the show was picked up by the network.  “At Here-TV, diversity and inclusion remain the central focus of our programing strategy,” says Emmy-winning actor and producer David Millbern.  “Producing Road to the Runway gives us the opportunity to honor and explore the lives of these extraordinary trans women, many of whom are also women of color. Their bravery inspires us.”

“The sky is the limit for these young women,” Asuncion sums up.  “From how I see it, it is my job to lead and develop the girl from hopeful to working model.  The supermodel part is up to the individual.   She must have the passion and drive to go the extra distance.”

The winning model of this year’s annual Slay Model search earns a spot in a M·A·C Campaign, a trip to London to shoot a Carmen Liu Lingerie campaign, a Colors of Love ring and a social media campaign from Faberge', shoes from Lidia Talavera, and a year contract with Slay Model Management.

Pride/BLM

Dwayne Wade, Zaya Wade & Gabrielle Union
As everyone knows by now Pride Festivals & Festivities are cancelled this year, this being stated with all of the necessary Black Lives Matter protests going on around the world today in Los Angeles the two will join forces.

In lieu of Pride there is a BLM march scheduled to take place at 11 am starting at Hollywood and Highland (the location of the first Gay Pride in Los Angeles) and ending in West Hollywood, the current home to Pride in LA.

While I am not planning on marching because of the current pandemic, I would if there wasn't one. I am wishing all of those who are well and please be safe.

Also Happy 13th Birthday to Zaya Wade, daughter of NBA Superstar Dwayne Wade and Actress Gabrielle Union. Her actual DOB is May 29th whose parents threw her a party this past Friday that combined the themes of medieval and pride.

In case you didn't know Zaya is transgender and proud stepmom Gabrielle had this to say to her on her special day:

"You are such an inspiration and motivation to get my butt up everyday and fight," she wrote. "When I'm weary, frustrated, full of rage, I see your face and your joy and you living your best life and I want that for all of us. I love you sooooo much kid!! Enjoy this day and everyday knowing you are loved, protected, respected, admired and celebrated."

Whatever you choose to do today, make it a celebration

Cyndi Lauper & Friends

Let's get charitable...

Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund (www.truecolorsfund.org) announced the lineup for its 6th annual “Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays” benefit concert on Saturday, December 3 at New York City’s historic Beacon Theatre to raise awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth homelessness. 100 percent of the net proceeds from the concert will support the True Colors Fund’s programs.

Cyndi Lauper will be joined on stage this year by Aloe Blacc, Ballets with a Twist, Big Thief, Billy Corgan, Grace VanderWaal, Judy Gold, Kate Bornstein, Maya Jupiter, Oxymorrons, Sara Ramirez, Sharon Van Etten, Theresa Caputo, Tyler Glenn, and host Carson Kressley. Additional guests will be announced soon. Tickets are available to the general public at Ticketmaster.com.

“For the sixth year, ‘Home for the Holidays’ will bring together an incredible group of performers to support the True Colors Fund’s work to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth," said Lauper, the organization’s co-founder. “Our voices are stronger when we say something together. I’m so grateful to the artists, who are donating their time and talent to bring attention to this very important cause.”

In America, up to 40 percent of the 1.6 million youth that are homeless each year identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Yet, less than seven percent of the general youth population is LGBT. The most cited reason for this disproportionate rate is family rejection due to the young person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Co-founded by Cyndi Lauper, the True Colors Fund works nationally to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. Through a broad continuum of public engagement, public policy, youth collaboration, research, and community organizing programs, the True Colors Fund is creating a world in which young people can be their true selves.

Some highlights of the True Colors Fund’s work this year include:

  • Hosting the second annual #40toNoneDay, a national day to raise awareness about LGBT youth homelessness, which reached over 98 million people online.
  • Partnering with The White House to conduct a Policy Briefing on Youth Homelessness to help prioritize the needs of youth experiencing homelessness within the Federal Government.
  • Launching the National Youth Forum on Homelessness, a youth-led project focused on ending youth homelessness in America, in partnership with the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
  • Releasing At the Intersections, the most comprehensive resource on LGBT youth homelessness, in partnership with the National LGBTQ Task Force.
  • Holding the third annual sold out 40 to None Summit, the only national annual gathering focused on innovative solutions to end LGBT youth homelessness in America.
  • Training it's second class of True Fellows, young LGBT leaders with experiences of homelessness, who conduct six-month service projects in their communities.
  • Releasing its second annual 40 of the 40 list, which highlights 40 LGBT young people who have experiences with homelessness and provides them with opportunities to engage in the organization’s work.
  • Providing free tools, resources, and training through its 40 to None Network for service providers and communities around the country to aid them in providing safe, inclusive, and welcoming support to LGBT youth experiencing homelessness.

“Home for the Holidays” is proud to have the support of: Platinum Sponsors Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and Van Gogh Vodka; Gold Sponsors The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Jujamcyn Theaters; Silver Sponsors Kinky Boots, The Madison Square Garden Company, Masie Productions, Reveal, Stifel, and Keith Bell, Licensed Acupuncturist.

Bruce Springsteen Is Boss

Taking A Stand
Bruce Srpingsteen
Bruce Springsteen used to be called "The Boss," at the height of his career. Well he may no longer be "The Boss" but he still is "Boss" meaning, an excellent and outstanding person.

He is so "Boss" he cancelled his plans to play his scheduled gigs in Greensboro, North Carolina days ahead of time. Here is the reason he gave:

"As you, my fans, know I'm scheduled to play in Greensboro, North Carolina this Sunday. As we also know, North Carolina has just passed HB2, which the media are referring to as the ‘bathroom' law. HB2—known officially as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act—dictates which bathrooms transgender people are permitted to use. Just as important, the law also attacks the rights of LGBT citizens to sue when their human rights are violated in the workplace. No other group of North Carolinians faces such a burden."

Expanding on his initial statement he also said:

"It's an attempt by people who cannot stand the progress our country has made in recognizing the human rights of all of our citizens to overturn that progress. Right now, there are many groups, businesses, and individuals in North Carolina working to oppose and overcome these negative developments. Taking all of this into account, I feel that this is a time for me and the band to show solidarity for those freedom fighters."

Not only did I grow up with Bruce's music, my sister Sue Waters is a huge Springsteen fan, and rightfully so.

A Different Kind Of "Tomboy"

Bend It Like
Michelle Rodriguez
Ever since Michelle Rodriguez hit the scene in the indie film Girl Fight she has always marched to the beat of her own drummer. In other words she is fantastic!

So leave it to her to star in a most unique tale about "an assassin who is double-crossed by gangsters and finds herself under the scalpel of a rogue surgeon known as “The Doctor,” who turns him into a woman. Rodriguez’s character then seeks revenge on the gang"

No your eyes are not deceiving you Michelle is going to play a transgender assassin. If anyone can pull this off it's her.

FYI "The Doctor" will be portrayed by none other than Sigourney Weaver, who coincidentally co-starred with Rodriguez in Avatar. One must always have a partner in crime I always say and Sigourney is a game actress up for anything.

Oh, yeah, the movie has a title too: Tomboy, A Revenger's Tale

It was written and will be directed by veteran action dude Walter Hill, best know for the cult film The Warriors and 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy.

Booyah!

Kiss Me Kate

Wedded Bliss:
Kate Pierson & Monica Coleman
"The Love Shack is a little old place where, We can get together" - Love ShackB-52's

Congratulations go out today to Kate Pierson of the B-52's on getting married to her longtime girlfriend Monica Coleman over the weekend in Hawaii! They have been together since 2003.

The B-52's are one of my favorite groups. I remember attending the CD release party for Cosmic Thing at the now defunct club Probe in Los Angeles, CA.

It was an exciting evening and the crowd was treated to a live performance by the group who arrived to the party in style on a Cadillac Convertible.

Pierson addressed accepting herself to Spin in it's February 2015 issue:

"All our friends — so many friends are gay or lesbian and transgender. We’re just in that world. We all went through the devastating time of the AIDS crisis and I think that galvanized us to be more activists — AIDS activists. I think through that struggle we’ve tried to do a lot of benefits and stuff. I think the meaning of ‘gay' became more solidified," she told the mag. "One of the things the B-52s wanted to accomplish was for people to embrace their difference and encourage people to be who they are and accept themselves."

Grrrrrls Like Us: Laverne Cox & Caitlyn Jenner
Laverne Cox has finally met Caitlyn Jenner at a private advanced screening of Jenner's TV show I Am Cait.

Laverne has been quite vocal and open in her support of Caitlyn - so what is one to do when this sort of thing transpires? Why hit social media with a picture of the two of them together, naturally.

Cox posted this caption along with the pic: "@caitlynjenner and I finally met in person at a special private advance screening of #IAmCait,"  "#TransIsBeautiful #girlslikeus #caitlynjenner,"

Looking good! Happy Monday Peeps!

Can We Talk? Ian Harvie Part II

Ian Harvie
Photo: Austin Young
"I don't understand it, but I accept it is societies go to phrase. It stops us from really putting ourselves in someone else's place. It keeps us from really going there. But we could go there, and if we allowed ourselves to do that we would really understand it." - Ian Harvie

The above quote is a little paraphrased but it stuck with me after I turned off the recorder and Ian and Myself were chatting off record. This is one of the most eye opening, honest things I have heard in a long time.

For those of you not in the loop Ian is a transgender comedian/actor and friend. Post Bruce Jenner's recent interview let's keep the dialogue flowing...

Note: This is part II of my interview with Ian, here is the link to part I:

http://mshinafelt.blogspot.com/2015/05/can-we-talk-ian-harvie-part-i.html

MS: I get feeling comfortable in your own skin. Now that I am almost fifty twenty somethings are hitting on me all the time. When I was in my twenties I could never get guys my own age interested.

IH: Their attraction is now, that you posses something inside that they wished they had. Let's take our exteriors out of this. I think people today, as we get to this place, we still deem exteriors important on some level, but...I'm in recovery, and I remember when I first got sober, the person that you ask to sponsor you, they have something that you want. There is something about them that reflects how you want to live your life. Someone might be pretty on the outside, but when you are really attracted to someone it's that they posses something that you wish you had, that you know you have, and you want to crack it open in some way. Sometimes for me it's on the surface, but usually it's what someone says, and I'm like: "Oh shit that was good!"

MS: I was headed there with this.

IH: Well, I just cut you off, sorry (laughs)

MS: Hey, this is an open forum. (laughs) You are really fearless with your comedy shows.

IH: I won't be exhausted with it until everybody fucking gets it. People ask me "are you tired?" I'm like: "No, no I want everybody to hear this." I will say it to whoever and as many times as I need to. Maybe I will say it differently with new material, but it's a really important part of what I want to do in this art medium.

MS: Awesome!

IH: Let's jump back to The Nightly Show for a second.

MS: Go for it.

IH: What I thought was really awesome about it was, that this is the Comedy Central demographic watching this show. Hearing these words and these perspectives, maybe for the first time. Maybe, maybe not, there was a live audience there and there were eruptions of applause. When I said there should be etiquette on behalf of Cisgender people to Transgender people everyone applauded. But that's a live New York audience, the average viewer of that show, who gets their information from what used to be The Colbert Report and what is now this show, most likely hasn't heard this before. What a great gain to have that dialogue on Comedy Central and their demographic.

MS: Absolutely.

IH: I was like Fuck Yeah! Fuck Yeah! Fuck Yeah, good!

MS: You did discuss Bruce Jenner on the show, I loved your Kardashian joke about all of them having plastic surgery by the way,

IH: Seriously with all the work that entire family has had done this should not be a shock. (laughs)  Yes, it's someone who was male at birth, an iconic athlete who has been in  the homes of all of America for years. Yes, so this is a new story, someone officially coming out like this is going to save lives. It's funny I use to tell a similar joke about Chaz Bono and Cher with all the work she has had done. (laughs) I like thinking of things that flip the narrative and to say the opposite of what everybody is thinking. This is not just a Trans peoples issue to figure out it is also other people's work to do as well. So I like thinking about things in reverse terms, thinking about them in other ways.

MS: Well in West Hollywood, CA they now have all access bathrooms and I love that because I know when I want to pee, I don't care where I go, I just want to go!

IH: How many times is there a line in one bathroom or the other? I mean, we all use the same bathroom when we are at home. But when we cross the threshold into the public: WE CAN NOT USE THE SAME BATHROOM! (laughs)

MS: One last thing. What the fuck are incinerating boobs?

IH: I just did a podcast where I discussed my chest surgery and was asked what happened to my boobs afterward. I said I didn't know they were probably in a incinerator somewhere in San Francisco. (laughs)

Can We Talk? Ian Harvie Part I

Ian Harvie
Photo: Miki Vargas

Note: Because this is a long interview and was so interesting. I am doing something I have never done before and presenting it in two parts.

MS: I caught you on Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, you were really great!

IH: Well I did have the benefit of knowing the subject matter going into the show. It isn't like I was going to talk about astrophysics (laughs) I was there to talk about gender and Jenner. Some topics I am super familiar with. As you know I have been thinking about these things for decades. (laughs)

MS: Not sure if you remember this, but...I saw you when your scruff was first coming in and I reached up a grabbed your face and felt it, and said: "Your getting your scruff how cool!" Then I thought how rude I was for not asking you to. You just smiled at me.

IH: Had it been a complete stranger, I don't know if I would have said something to you, but my body language might have been something other than "alright, whatever" you know. (laughs) I also think it has to do with context. Context is everything. Even when we spoke on the show about the use of the word "Fag" or "Tranny" whatever language is like the "N word" of any given community it's all about the who and how it's being used. So you coming up to me an touching my face, it's really context, and I believe that I am intuitive enough to understand when someones context even without words. Just by their actions, it's really rare that someone is coming up to you with ill intent. I know that people are worried about it, that they look for it even when it is not there. I've watched so many people misinterpret things that were clearly not what they were thinking it was. They are hyper vigilant about the topic of people being derogatory about Trans-People and not getting storylines right because they have gotten them wrong for so long, that our community is incredibly sensitive, as they should be, but even about things that were not with male intent. Even with Larry Wilmore on the show, he would tell me to write certain things down and I'd slide it to him and he'd say it anyway, part of it was to be shockingly comedic. Part of it was to name the word for people even though I didn't want to say it, it was to start a dialogue around it, Larry wasn't calling someone that name. he was saying the word. Then people got in a major uproar about it. Context for me is everything.

MS: I agree. I am sometimes off the cuff so I was curious about what you thought about that. Obviously what I did was without any bad intent, however it was so spontaneous...

IH: Also having seen someone before who did not have facial hair, and the next time you see them it's like "holy shit you have facial hair" there is probably a physical draw in an innocent way that makes you want to reach out and touch it. It's like "Wow!" and your hand just goes out in front of you. (laughs) I kind of don't blame people it's a really miraculous fucking process.

MS: I know this is something that I may be saying out of turn, but you are a cute guy.

IH: Here's the thing someone said this on Facebook the other day and I have to agree with it, it's time that Cisgender people, and I don't mean this as an insult to you or to anybody, get over the fact that Transpeople are hot. It's like we are somehow exempt owning beauty and I am not the hottest dude on the planet. There's a thought culture because we are Transpeople we are not thought of as hot. When Transpeople are hot it is somehow an even more heightened kind of amazement on Cisgender peoples part. My God they're Trans and their hot! (both laugh)

MS: I've only ever known you as a guy, if someone hadn't told me that you were Trans I don't think I would have known.

IH: It's the whiskers. (laughs)

MS: When I say something it's in general terms it's never about pointing something out.

IH: My sentiment probably applies more to Trans-Women. Because they have been the subject of such misogyny. They hear that they are not woman enough, they are not pretty enough for the male gays. What I am saying is probably more applicable to the Trans-Women community. People when they see someone in that community, when they comment they are hot, it's shocking probably more so than for Trans-Guys. Please don't take this as an insult, but I guess I take that as a compliment that someone finds me attractive. Because I have struggled with my outward appearance for so long, that I never actually felt hot myself. It never ever sunk in. I've spent over forty years not feeling beautiful and for the first time I do feel beautiful.

Paint Your Nails For Bruce

Bruce Jenner & Diane Sawyer
Who knew that the simple everyday act of polishing one's nails could take on a larger meaning? Well it has...

Men are getting their Instagram & Tweet on and painting their finger nails in support of Bruce Jenner's transition to a woman.  #PaintYourNailsforBruce

The social media movement originated at KIIS 1065 in Sydney as a way to show solidarity with Jenner. Women are now joining the ranks as well.
The KIIS Gang!
Nail polish was the chosen symbol of oneness because as Bruce pointed out in his interview with Diane Sawyer

"I'd like to be able to have my nail polish on long enough that it actually chips off."

Bruce Jenner has had the full support of his family and friends behind him, with this he now knows people have his back worldwide.

Neil Patrick Harris Has An "Angry Inch"

Watch Out Bitches, Neil Patrick Harris Is On The Loose!
Apparently Neil Patrick Harris, the immensely likable performer is a bit of a
Devo (Male term for Diva for those not in the loop) - Oh and by the way, kidding!

Neil Patrick Harris' recent Broadway performance of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is causing a bit of a stir.
After a female admirer yelled out "I love you Neil!," during the show Saturday, Harris shot back, "I'm doing something up here, motherf—cker!"
The former "How I Met Your Mother" star isn't denying that this happened, but he is saying the supposed curse out was taken out of context.
The musical—about a transgender German rocker—is highly improvisational, embracing audience interaction."
It's great that an enthusiastic fan was there in the audience for Mr. Harris to take her comment and make it a part of the show. I bet she loved it!

NPH made the following statement to Out Magazine:

"Hedwig is bringing up a lot of super insecure things within me. I never thought drag was intoxicating, I've never had a fun drunken Halloween in drag, never been in heels, really. I've lived my whole life being attracted by masculinity—it's why I like guys. I'm not a super effete person, and I have to turn into that, and in doing so it brings up a lot of homophobic insecurities within myself."

Neil you are preaching to this choir I hear ya!
Currently in previews "Hedwig" opens April 22nd!

Buy your tickets here: http://www.broadway.com/shows/hedwig-and-angry-inch/
